Repatriation of Human Remains to Serbia


The following documents are to be submitted to the Consulate General of Serbia in Sydney for approval of repatriation of the remains of a deceased person to Serbia:

1) Death Certificate, with an APOSTILLE stamp, translated into Serbian language by an authorised translator. APOSTILLE certificates are issued by the relevant government department - In Australia: Australian Passports Office Authentications Section (Ph: 1300 935 260 or visit www.smartraveller.gov.au), in NZ - NZ government (Ph: 0800 872 675 or visit www.govt.nz/authentications);

2) Health Department Certificate;
3) Embalming Certificate/Certificate of Cremation;
4) Letter from the medical practitioner, stating:

  • the cause of death; and
  • whether the deceased died from an infectious disease;

5) Preparation Certificate issued by the Funeral Parlour;
6) Valid or expired passport of the Republic of Serbia; or the former Yugoslavia;
7) If the deceased does not have a Serbian passport or citizenship, evidence of a secured burial place from a Funeral Parlour in Serbia is required;

The following information is also required:

  • place of burial in Serbia;
  • full name, address and phone number of person/s arranging the transfer of the deceased's remains to Serbia;
  • if applicable, full name, address and phone number of the person/s accompanying the deceased's remains to Serbia;
  • full name, address, phone number of the person/s responsible for receiving the deceased's  remains upon arrival to Serbia and arranging the funeral;
  • airline, flight number, time of departure and arrival of the aircraft carrying the deceased;
  • name of  the border crossing (or airport) where the deceased's remains will enter Serbia.

Bill of Lading fee is AUD $9.00. Translation of Death Certificate fee, from English to Serbian language, is AUD $78.00. Fees are payable by cash, bank cheque or money order in the name of “Consulate-General of the Republic of Serbia”. Please note that personal and company cheque will not be accepted.

Postage requirements: for Australia, please provide a pre-paid self-addressed express or registered post envelope (or additional AU$ 7.00 for postage). For New Zealand, please add AU$18.00 for international postage.

If applying for transit only, in addition to the above information, please include:
   ● the name of the border crossing where the body/ashes of the deceased will exit Serbia;
   ● a copy of the Bill of Lading (Mortuary Passport) issued by the country, where the deceased is to be buried;

Applications for the Bill of Lading (Mortuary Passport) are treated with priority and are processed urgently upon receipt of the required documentation.

Please note that longer processing time is required if no proof of a citizenship status was submitted, or if the deceased died from an infectious disease. In such cases, this Consulate General is required to seek the approval from the relevant authorities in Serbia before issuing the Bill of Lading (Mortuary Passport).
