Admission to citizenship of refugees, expelled and displaced persons

A person born in another republic of the former SFRY, who held the citizenship of that republic or is a citizen of another state created on the territory of the former SFRY, who, as a refugee, expelled or displaced person resides in Australia/New Zealand, may be admitted to the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia provided that they have reached 18 years of age, have not been deprived of legal capacity, and if they submit a written statement that they consider the Republic of Serbia to be their state. (Article 23, Paragraph 2 of the Law on Citizenship).

You may submit the request in the following ways:

  1. IN PERSON
    It is necessary to schedule an appointment electronically on the consulate’s website
  2. BY SENDING THE REQUEST BY MAIL
    The request (forms and accompanying documents) can be sent to the address of the consulate.
    It is necessary that your signatures on the forms and the statement, as well as copies of the documents, be certified by a Justice of the Peace.

Required documents:

  1. Completed form no. 7 – signed in the presence of a consular officer, or before a Justice of the Peace if the request is submitted by mail;
  2. Signed statement that you consider the Republic of Serbia to be your state (Statement on considering the RS as your state) – signed in the presence of a consular officer, or before a Justice of the Peace if the request is submitted by mail;
  3. Extract from the birth register (Birth certificate) and Certificate of citizenship (Domovnica, Uvjerenje o državljanstvu), not older than one year. If you also possess Australian/New Zealand citizenship, submit proof of Australian/New Zealand citizenship (Citizenship certificate certified with an Apostille stamp and translated into the Serbian language in Cyrillic script by an authorized translator).
  • A list of authorized translators can be found at www.naati.com.au
  • The time required for the request to be resolved by the Ministry of Internal Affairs is about one year.

The fee for submitting the request is AUD$ 116.00
